The African Violet Society of San Francisco is dedicated to the culture, protection,and appreciation of African Violets or Saintpaulias all over the world. The San Francisco African Violet Society brings together people in the San Francisco bay area interested in the culture and propagation of African Violets, and also serves an educational function in disseminating information about African Violets to the public.

The African Violet Society of San Francisco is a branch or affiliate of the African Violet Society of America, Inc..

We welcome everyone else that may be curious about African Violets and Saintpaulias, along with other plant enthusiasts interested in sharing our love of African Violets!


Meetings and Programs

Join us for one of our monthly meetings!

Meetings are held on the 4th Saturday each month and start 9:00am til 12:00pm, in the Garden Room of the San Francisco County Fair Building at 9th Ave and Lincoln Way, San Francisco.

Free admission and parking. Plants for sale! Bring a problem plant and any cultural questions. Information on joining our Society and the National Organization [www.avsa.org] will be available, along with culture sheets. Visitors and new members always welcome!



Plant Shows, Sales and Conventions
  • Summer Gardening Fair - Sat, Aug 4th, 2012

    This annual plant sale is held at the San Francisco Botanical Garden. This Summer Gardening Fair is your opportunity to find out about all the other plant societies in the San Francisco area!   • Annual Gesneriad & African Violet Sale - Sat, June 9, 2012

    We also hold an annual plant sale and show in conjuction with the SF Gesneriad Society (SFGesneriads.org) on the 2nd Saturday of June in the SF County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park at Lincoln Way and 9th Ave. Our plant sale and show is held the same Saturday as the SF Bromeliad Society's Show and Sale)! It is quite a weekend for plant sales and shows, all held in the same building!


Membership and Dues

Please stop by and join us. We have $12 dues per year and discounts to plants, field trips and parties. National dues are extra with color magazine, if desired.


Publications

We have a monthly bulletin. You may subscribe to a half-price 4 times a year State Magazine and/or a 6 times yearly color magazine from the AVSA, our National Organization, www.avsa.org

  • We are a non-profit, horticultural organization striving to promote and maintain public and scientific interest in research, preservation, development and distribution of African Violets throughout the world. Members find new friends in San Francisco Bay Area. Plant lovers like you are growing in windows, in greenhouses, in indoor light gardens and outside in temperate regions. We’'re working to make everyone aware of how much fun and how easy it is to grow African Violets. You can help.

  • We publish a monthly bulletin ...for both the amateur and the professional; the explorer, the scientist, the hybridizer, the grower and the blue-ribbon winner. As a member you’ll be among the first to find out about recently discovered species, the latest hybrid, the newest growing “secrets’: Discover new friends who share your amazement, excitement and delight growing these wonderful plants. We look forward to you sharing your experiences.

  • The African Violet Magazine (AVM) is filled with great growing information and is published 6 times annually in full-color (64 pages each). Regular columns include: For Beginners, Question Box, In Search of New Violets, Gesneriad Advice, Thinking Small and Coming Events. We highly recommend becoming a Member of the AVSA in order to receive this wonderful publication as one of several AVSA Member benefits!

  • We are active in research ...to provide support for the identification of new species; to promote registration of worthy hybrids and to assist in the education of judges to accurate judging standards thorough clear documentation.

  • We promote growing and showing ...with affiliate societies throughout the country who encourage their members to show and promote African Violets locally. The African Violet Society of America, Inc. provides cultural sheets and awards annually for best species and hybrid exhibit in each affiliate society’s show.
